Do You Want More Professional Growth and Opportunities?
No matter what your career or personal goals are, mastering public speaking skills is an important part of your personal development. You probably realize that improving communication skills is helpful in almost every area of life. The higher you go up the corporate ladder, the more valuable your presentation skills become.
When you act, dress, and speak for the position you want–not currently have–you get promoted faster.
There are many benefits of developing good public speaking. I hope Steve’s story will encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and take action.
When you develop good public speaking skills, you increase your professional growth and opportunities.
Steve Gerardi has always loved rock music. At his first rock show at age fifteen, he watched the promoter’s team walk around the arena. Even though Steve did not know what it would require, he said to his friend, “That is what I am going to do.”
The local production company where Steve lived was Sunshine Promotions. He began as a part-time show runner with the goal to become a concert production manager and talent buyer.
After two years, the call came. A full-time job was offered, and he dropped everything else and moved to Indianapolis.
Lucky for Steve, his last boss encouraged and helped finance all employees to attend the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking Course.
He excelled! He told his friends, “It was amazing how fast being able to stand up and talk to strangers built my confidence, and my skills increased quickly.”
After working for Sunshine for eighteen months, his boss Dave asked Steve to come to his office. Dave handed him two pages of handwritten notes and said, “Please read this. Do you understand it? Tell me what you think it says.” Steve said, “You say it is imperative for success in our industry to re-negotiate and create deals with concert venues. Especially when tickets are not selling as we expected. Even with a signed contract, there are times we have to be flexible and renegotiate.”
Dave and his partner were both very shy, and neither liked the spotlight. Even though Steve was the newest and youngest employee, he was the only one Dave had confidence in to speak on his behalf.
That night Steve was on a plane to attend and speak at a regional meeting of venue managers.
He said, “Although I was the youngest person in the room, once I finished speaking, everyone treated me as an industry expert. This built my confidence and credibility, and the relationships were very good for Sunshine.”
Eleven years later when Dave and his partner sold the company for $65 million dollars, Steve was ready to open his own company.
As the President of SG Entertainment, he helps companies book entertainment for their corporate events and celebrations.
If you are an ambitious professional like Steve, The No 1 Best Way to accomplish what you want is to communicate more effectively.
