Ever Wondered How to Open Your Presentation with Impact?
This is how I opened my keynote presentation for District 12 Toastmasters Spring conference.
“In July 1978 at the Galt House Hotel in Louville, KY at my second NSA convention Dr. Kenneth McFarland who was considered the Dean of all American speakers and the person we all wished to emulate said, “Say something of interest to you and your audience. Say it well and stop. Your audience should be able to answer two questions. What are you saying and how do you know it.”
The purpose the opening remarks of a speech is to grab the interest of the audience. There were many speakers in attendance who are very familiar with my presentations. As this is a new way for me to open they would think “Here is something I have not heard from Fripp…goodie!”
For many who where there as a result of marketing proclaiming I was the world’s best speech coach (not a claim I made myself) perhaps they were thinking “Wow she has been studying speaking for a long time,” or “Maybe she will be a good as they said.”
There are many techniques to open a presentation: a statement, a story, a quote, a question, a rhetorical question, your conclusion or an interesting statistic or little known fact.
