I enjoyed five Broadway shows in New York. Four days later, I traded Broadway for progressive rock in Arizona.
What do these experiences have in common? Extraordinary talent, masterful performances, and the ability to create unforgettable experiences for an audience.
This was my third time seeing BEAT, the extraordinary group celebrating the music of King Crimson’s iconic 1980s albums: Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair.
The lineup includes two longtime King Crimson members, Adrian Belew and Tony Levin; the magnificent Steve Vai, performing the guitar parts my brother, Robert Fripp, originally created; and, this time, legendary drummer Terry Bozzio.
What a collection of musical talent!
Steve Vai is a virtuoso in his own right. What fascinates me is how he honors Robert’s extraordinary compositions while bringing his own musical personality to the performance.
And Terry Bozzio! Famous for his work with Frank Zappa and Missing Persons, he brings an entirely different musical history and approach to the drums.
Naturally, I’ve known Tony Levin and Adrian Belew for decades. More recently, I’ve become friends with Steve Vai, and this concert gave me the opportunity to meet Terry for the first time.
My first meeting with Steve Vai is a story worth telling.
After the first BEAT concert in San Jose, they escorted me backstage to the room where Steve was relaxing.
I introduced myself with, “I know your only interest in meeting a woman who is a senior citizen is because my brother is Robert Fripp.”
He immediately smiled and replied, “Well, I’m a senior citizen as well.”
What a delightful response! And what fun to meet a fellow fashion enthusiast. Steve is certainly a male fashionista!
Wednesday evening was even more special because I shared it with Anthony Garone and Steve Ball, two friends I originally met through Robert. Both are superb musicians in their own right and accomplished business professionals.
Music has a wonderful way of creating lasting friendships. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when your brother is Robert Fripp, a founding member and the one constant member throughout King Crimson’s history!
As an executive speech coach and lifelong student of performance, I never stop learning from great artists.
Whether watching Broadway actors or world-class musicians, I am reminded that technical mastery is only part of the equation.
Preparation, precision, personality, and passion transform an impressive performance into an unforgettable experience.
The greatest performers don’t simply demonstrate their skills. They make their audiences feel the experience.
And isn’t that exactly what we want to accomplish every time we step onto a stage to speak?
“The information in FrippVT is as valuable as any college course I’ve taken. Everyone should be aware of this resource. The investment is worth 10 times what I paid and has been life-changing. My fees, recommendations, and referrals have increased dramatically. I am delighted.” Mitzi Perdue, author of How to Make Your Family Business Last
