Had any good conversations recently?
In this message, we’re going to clarify what you may believe are two conflicting ideas. The point of retelling stories you heard, and the idea of only telling stories from your own experience. If you are retelling stories you heard in conversation, and you make heroes of the people who shared their experience, then great. The assumption is, they are not speakers, don’t work at your company, or will ever address audiences you will speak to. In our world of YouTube, if others are talking publicly about their experiences, and others may have heard them, you need to acknowledge that.
Once you become aware and keep your eyes and ears open, stories that will make great examples are everywhere.
When you add techniques that give them more impact, you will be acknowledged as a good storyteller. This chapter is called, “Enjoyed Any Good Conversations Recently?” to help you become aware of how simple and frequent conversations can deliver you wonderful examples for your presentations.
In this example, Gary Richter told me his story. His philosophy and leadership made him the hero for setting the tone for the bank employees. After delivering a speech on good customer service at a banking conference, Gary walked up and said, “Patricia, I started running a small boutique bank in Naples, Florida, and we believe in great service. On a Friday, we close at 5:30.
“One Friday, an elderly woman called at 5:20 and said, ‘I need to come in and cash a $200 check. I’m twenty minutes away, when do you close?’”
He asked me, “If we close in ten minutes and she’s twenty minutes away, what will good service be?”
“Stay open,” I said.
“Patricia, we don’t give good service, we give exceptional service. We said, ‘Stay where you are and one of our employees, when she’s driving home, will come by your house, drop off the $200, and pick up the endorsed check.’”
Her account showed it had a small balance. That didn’t tell the whole story. The woman was quite affluent and had recently relocated to the area. Her many millions of dollars were invested and managed by a large national bank. When she found out they cared, she said, ‘Can you look after all my other financial needs?’ She took all her money out of the big bank, and deposit it with them.

“The information in FrippVT is as valuable as any college course I’ve taken. This is a resource that everyone needs. The investment is worth ten times more than I paid and has been life-changing. My fees, recommendations, and referrals have increased dramatically. I am delighted. For the first time in my speaking career, I know exactly what I am doing when I walk on stage. One technique in Course 8 helped me win a highly-paid, international speech.” Mitzi Perdue, author of How to Make Your Family Business Last
